In Search of Knowledge – the Follow-up

Friday, February 23rd, 2007

Last week’s lawn care seminar, presented by the good folks from the University of Florida (home of the national champions of college football and basketball), turned out to be very interesting and informative.

There’s much to discuss but I will have to sift through all of the reading material in order to get to the best parts. But trust me, there’s plenty to talk about and we have all the time in the world. Some highlights:

  • Watering your yard during the winter will promote dollar weed in the spring.
  • Do not use weed and feed products
  • Weeds do not kill grass, however, grass does kill weeds
  • If you only fertilize once a year, do it in September
  • Hedge clippers are evil

Those are just a few of the highlights I can remember off the top of my head. I will expound on what I’ve learned as we continue our journey toward lawn xanadoo.

An Old Friend Revisited

Friday, February 23rd, 2007

Recently I happened to find myself, by sheer chance, at the local Hardees. I don’t remember exactly how I got there, but I was there, and I planned to take advantage of my fortunate cirmcumstance.

There was a time, not so long ago, that I relished one and only one offering from the Hardees gods – the Grilled Sourdough. In fact, I had fallen into such a relentless habit of ordering the same item, I no longer had to verbalize my order. I could just walk in the door and the Hardees maiden would belt out my order for me.

Time passed and I found I could no longer order a GS at such a high frequency. It was 1000+ calories of sheer madening bliss but it all came to a crashing end.

Regretably someone, probably a pencil-pusher buried deep within Hardee’s accounting department, decided that it would be better to discontinue using “grilled” onions on the the “grilled” sourdough and replace them with regular onions. In silent protest, I eased off my steady diet of GS burgers and instead opted for the slightly less-expensive Six Dollar Burger.

And yet, I found myself entering into familiar territory upon my recent visit. What would be so wrong in taking a GS for another spin, after all of this time? It was still angus beef. It was still sourdough bread.

It was quite satisfying. And though not quite on par with the earlier rendition, still an outstanding selection.

Buffalo Chicken Sandwich

In between trips to satisfy carnal Angus desires, it’s often nice to cleanse the pallet with one of the lesser meats. I would encourage everyone to sample the newest menu item offered up by Hardees, the Buffalo Chicken Sandwich. It reminds one of the Buffalo Chicken Salad from Chili’s yet not quite up to the same level. However, for fast food quisine, it’s certainly commendable.

Having said that, I certainly would not want you to endulge if you have not met your daily angus quotient. Priorities must always be established and obeyed.

In Search of Knowledge

Wednesday, February 14th, 2007

I will be attending a lawn care/maintenance seminar this Saturday. I believe it’s being conducted by staff from the University of Florida, home of the National Champion Football and Basketball teams (the greatest college sports program ever known to mankind). If UF can win national championships at will, imagine what they can do for my lawn!

I have no idea what to expect but I look forward, with great anticipation, to sharing my newfound knowledge with all of you.
